The mass media are an integral part of our lives and society. We live in a world influenced by sights, sounds, values, and opinions presented by the mass media – those print, non-print and electronic texts that communicate with a mass audience.

This course emphasizes knowledge and skills that will allow you to understand 21st century media communication. Through analyzing the conventions, forms and messages of a variety of media, and through creating your own media works, you will develop skills in critical and creative thinking, collaboration, and listening, speaking,reading, writing, viewing, and representing.

During this course, you are going to gain greater understanding of your media consumption and learn to use media effectively and responsibly.  Some of the questions we will discuss and answer include :

  • What information is being presented to me?
  • How is it being presented? By whom?
  • What is the purpose?
  • Can I trust what is being presented to me?
  • What do I need to be aware of when I present information?
  • What are some of the things I need to be aware of when analyzing these forms of media?
